Now for some lighter fare. In the 1970s the LPGA began promoting the sex appeal of players in Fairway magazine, which commissioner Ray Volpe created in 1976 as an annual insert in Golf Magazine. It was created, he said, “to gain respect, recognition, and yes, even love for 300 women professional golfers.” The magazine featured players such as Jan Stephenson in evening dresses and swimwear. Gary McCord, former CBS commentator and Tour comedian, claimed that “Those girls don’t have a monopoly on sex appeal in golf. We think the PGA Tour deserves equal exposure, as it were.” I attach a photo of the “beefcake” models, from an August 1983 Golf Magazine article - Rex Caldwell, Payne Stewart, Keith Fergus, Greg Norman, and Peter Jacobsen.
