Ken Venturi at the end of his rope, 1964

In 1964, Ken Venturi was trying to make a comeback from a terrible slump. After missing the cut at the Los Angeles Open early in the year, he returned home and one night after midnight went to his basement workshop to clean his clubs. Soon he found himself on his knees. “Dear God, please don’t let me die like this…You can do anything with me that you want to do in the future, but please, God, please don’t let me go on like this. I beg you, put those clubs back in my hands just as they were before. Give me just one more chance to prove that I’m a man."
