Alexa Stirling, a 3-time U.S. Women's Amateur champion, grew up with Bobby Jones and played golf with him when they were young (he about 10 or 12). Her father didn’t like it because even at this tender age Jones swore up a storm and he told her to stop playing with him. When she in turn informed Bobby of her father's admonition, Jones replied, “A lot of good it does me to play golf with you blankety-blank girls. If I am ever going to be a golfer I’ve got to play with the men. I’m just glad your old man stopped you.” But when World War I broke out the two ended up playing numerous exhibitions together to raise money for the war effort.
