James Dodson wrote about the controlling nature of Ben Hogan in his book Hogan: An American Life: In 1953 Bobby Goodyear, an Augusta National member, invited the Hogan’s to dinner. Ben was very pleasant Goodyear recalled. “But I learned firsthand how finicky he could still be about things. When I asked him if he wanted a martini, he replied, ‘Yes. That would be nice.’ But then he added, ‘Say, would you mind if I made it myself?’ So he made the martinis. Then came time to grill the steaks. I asked Ben how he preferred his fillet grilled. ‘Medium rare,’ he replied. Then damned if he didn’t add, ‘Look, would you mind terribly if I cooked the steaks?’ So he did. Did a hell of a job too. That was Ben. Perfect gentleman but in control all the way, as usual.”
