Price Collier, an author and member of New York social society, wrote of the value of golf for character development in Outing magazine in 1896. Sport in general, and golf in particular, show us how to "endure hardship, to control temper, to accept defeat cheerfully, never to take the smallest unfair advantage of your opponent, or to whine and excuse one’s self, to be modest when successful, and not to boast or brag of past, probably, possible, or potential feats – all these are the possible teachings of honest sport.”
